5 Cozy Spots to Use Lamps in Your Home

Are you looking for a way to add a feeling of warmth to your house? Lamps are one of the easiest ways to do this. I’m sharing 5 spots to use lamps in your home to make it feel cozier with ambient lighting.

It’s actually taken me a few years to add much of any lamp light to our home. Other than a few scattered throughout the house, I just haven’t put much effort into using lamps. Not because I don’t love them, but I haven’t had the right spots to use them. Now that we’ve been settled here, for over three and half years, I’m starting to feel more at home…and wanting to add that cozy lighting that can only be created by a lamp.

In case you need some inspiration for where you can use lamps in your own home, I wanted to share five of the cozy spots I have tucked them in our house, to add that perfect bit of warm glow.

We didn’t really have much of an entryway in our old house, so it has been so much fun having one here! The only real bummer I’ve had is that the outlet is really on the wrong side of the space. It makes much more sense to have the entryway table (and all the fun decor) to the left as you come into the house. The only place there is an outlet, though, is to the right.

No worries, though, because I use the magic light trick. What’s that you ask? Well, wherever I want to have a light, but don’t have a power source, I use a puck light. Most are powered by batteries, but I’ve recently discovered some that I can recharge. These have been a game changer. The charge lasts a lot longer and I don’t have to waste money on batteries all the time—just plug them in instead.

We have a small piece of wall that is sort of part of our living room, going into our dining space. Since we have an open concept house, I’ve noticed that we have a few awkward spots that I want to use, because wall space is limited, but it sometimes they’re too small to do much with.

I’ve slowly been adding to these spaces to make them more useable, often with a table or shelf of some kind. This particular spot did have a rolling cart (it could come back sometime soon…) and I mostly used it to hold some overflow glassware from our floating shelves.

I switched the rolling cart out to this chippy vintage table I snagged at an estate sale and love the way it looks here. It seems more like an actual table to me than the cart did, so it apparently also made me think that a lamp would be a good thing here.

I thrifted the one pictured here last week (the shade was thrifted separately) and will be making it over soon. I love how it looks in this spot, though, and the cozy glow it adds to this tiny piece of wall space!

This is one of the spots that I’ve had a lamp almost from the time we moved into this house. The main hallway to the bedrooms and guest bath is just really dark. I mean…I did have thrifted black floral wallpaper hung as soon as we moved in, but still…it’s just a dark spot.

I use a mirror here, as well, to allow the light to reflect as much as it can, back into the rest of the space. I love the way the hallway looks at night, with the glow of the lamp. I also feel like it makes the space look a little bit bigger, even though I’ve taken up some of the real estate with a small table. I have had two furniture pieces here and I made sure that both of them were fairly shallow, so they don’t take up too much room. The buffet-style lamp I use is the perfect size for this spot!

I think a lot of times, people don’t put a lamp next to their sofa, if there isn’t a table of some sort, unless maybe it’s an arch-style floor lamp, behind the corner of a sectional or something. I love the idea of having a lamp next to a sofa though, since it acts as both ambient and task lighting. When no one is sitting in this spot on the sofa, the lamp acts as ambient light…casting a glow in this dark corner in the room. If someone is sitting there and wants to read, this lamp adds just the right amount of extra task lighting.

If you’re going to add a floor lamp next to a sofa, I prefer the look of having a bit of an arch…versus a straight up and down lamp. It allows you to position the light a little better and just looks softer. Totally a personal preference, though!

I created this little reading spot in our bedroom a few months ago and love how it has added to the overall space. It can be hard to fill walls in a bedroom, if you don’t have a bunch of big furniture pieces, which we do not.

A reading chair and small table (in this case a floor pouf) are perfect to take up some space, though, but not feel too heavy. After I put this collection together, something was missing—a lamp!

I found this brass floor lamp at a secondhand junk shop and was able to buy it for only five dollars! I knew exactly where it was going to go and it looks just as great here as I thought it would! It added height to the grouping and helps to bridge the distance between the top of the chair and the piece of vintage art that I have hanging above it.

Jason has enjoyed using this spot as a place to read before bed…although it might be a tad feminine for his taste. Ha!
